The school has very recently been going through a process of implementing a revised pupil support structure to reflect the City’s new agreed arrangements
.We were unhappy about both the reduction in guidance support and the proposed very speedy rate of introduction. We therefore made a detailed representation to the Children & Families Dept (see May 18th post
Impact on BHS of Pupil Support Review )
While it has unfortunately not been possible to impact in the short term on the overall changes, the reorganisation has been effected without the need for a competitive interview situation for the staff concerned. This at least is excellent news! It has been made possible in part by the fact that due to other commitments, David Dodds who was Principal Teacher Support for Learning, will move to the post of Teacher of Support for Learning on a p/t basis. Maree Longmore will move to take up the post of Acting Support for Learning Leader.
We are committed to keeping the new arrangements under review -particularly the potential impact of the reduction in the amount of time available for one-to-one case work. In the meantime, the revised structure from August 13th will be:
Support for Pupil Leaders
Chris Brandie
Fiona Grant
Mary Baker
Fiona Somerville
Support for Learning Leader
Maree Longmore (acting)
One major impact of the change, will be an associated longer-term reduction in the number of school Houses from 6 to 4. This is not a trivial task and the school is currently looking at how best to effect it. It will most likely take at least a year to fully implement. The current 6 Houses will therefore initially continue next session, with some re-allocation of pupils to ‘Guidance Teachers’ to reflect the new staffing arrangements.
